From Computers To Books Or There And Back Again

By Bookman – I’ve been everywhere man.

After going to University and completing a degree in computer programming I worked for a year customizing windows 3.11 for workgroups. Bored at doing this locked away in a room by myself I then got a job as library assistant at Hastings Public Library. I have never looked back, no regrets at all. It was the best decision I have made. I completed NZLS Certificate in 1990 and then completed a diploma in Applied Management in 2007. I obtained a level 4 certificate in Te Reo Maori in 2009.

I have moved about in a number of positions, across all 3 Libraries including children’s, cataloguing, and Deputy Library Manager.  I have been through a new library opening, 3 library extensions, a library re-carpeting, and 6 migrations to different library management  systems. I have project managed numerous projects and now look after the archives at Havelock North Library as the Reference and Archives Librarian.

The move into the archival field was following my interest in history and my curious nature. I’ve always been interested in the stories behind things. A huge part of archives in any organization is outreach. I enjoy networking and make contacts within the community not only to obtain historical documents and photos for the archive but also to let the community know the repository is there. I enjoy helping customers with their research, and the constant learning about the village I work & live in. I enjoy the customer service aspect and varied question I get thrown at me via email, snail mail, telephone and in person. One of the reasons I love my job is because I see it as one big puzzle. There are small puzzles too and the joy of unfolding the past and reliving the stories people tell me is fascinating.

Quarter of a century later, I’m still enthusiastic, enjoying libraries, giving great customer service and putting the Library out there. Now I’m giving back, I’m involved on Regional Committee and SIG and writing articles for Library Life and helping others enjoy our profession as much as I do.
