I Always Wanted To Be A Librarian!

By Eleanor Bensemann, I am the branch librarian at Picton Library. I began working in libraries as a teenager-many years ago!

As a child our local library was the Patea Library in South Taranaki. It was a special treat to be taken there and it happened often. Books were my overwhelming passion and when I was five years old I told my parents I wanted to be a librarian when I grew up. I never wavered from that, and began my working career as a student working in the Palmerston North Public Library. Apart from a fourteen year break to raise my family (and even then I did some voluntary library work!) I have worked in libraries ever since-and I still love it!

Eleanor I manage Patea LibraryPlus so loved reading that it was your childhood library. That would have been in the old Hunter Shaw Budling, which is now a community space. Do you remember the Librarian’s name by any chance? Maybe Joan Hughson?
