Oh, The Places You’ll Go! There Is Fun To Be Done!

By Ngai Deckard, IT Librarian/ Website Administrator/IT Support Central Hawke’s Bay District Council & Libraries.

I grew up in a house of books. My Dad worked at School Pubs, was a poet and was often published in Listener and Landfall. The story goes that my Mum was once caught reading a book oblivious to my eldest brother sawing the legs off the dining room table! Couldn’t avoid books in our house. I deeply coveted my other brother’s copies of The Hobbit and the Lord of The Rings printed on rice paper and with gold leaf. Still my favourite books to this day.

I was lucky enough to get a job at Hamilton City Library whilst studying at Waikato University. Loved it. I then travelled a lot, married, had 2 lovely girls and settled back onto the family farm. Wanting to be involved with my children’s education I volunteered at their local primary school library, got to completely revamp it and move it to a bigger space and then everything escalated from there.  Got to do IT and library work at another primary school and then moved onto secondary schools. My husband Clint is still involved at our local primary school even now having just got their library onto Koha.
I spent 10  years getting my BA in LIS whilst working in School Libraries and also in IT. Being able to merge my two passions was truly the icing on the cake. Now I get to ‘get my geek on’ every day either in my job as IT Librarian at CHB Libraries or in my job as Website Admin and IT Support at CHB Council.

The future? Well my eldest daughter is in her last year of her BA in LIS and my youngest is off to Victoria next year to do Classical Studies and  Museum and Heritage Studies. Maybe we will make it a Welly trifecta as I would love to study for the MLIS.
